854 PASS ALONG BULLETIN
#2 of 2005

I want to take a moment to thank the entire membership for everything you did this past difficult week. There is no way I can express to you how much it meant to the families of our fallen brothers. I want to also recognize all the members, both past and present, from Engine 46/Ladder 27, Engine 290/ Ladder 103 and Rescue 3 for all the support you gave to the families of our fallen and injured members.

A week that began in tragedy on a cold Sunday morning last week, ended with Firefighter Brendan Cawley walking out of St. Barnabas Hospital to the sound of the FDNY Bagpipes.

May Lt. Curtis Meyran, Firefighter John Bellew and Firefighter Richard Sclafani rest in eternal peace and may God provide a speedy recovery to Firefighter Jeff Cool, Firefighter Joseph DiBernardo, Firefighter Eugene Stolowski and Firefighter Brendan Cawley.

Blood Drive – The New York Blood Center will host a special blood drive in honor of Lt. Curtis Meyran of Battalion 26, Firefighter John Bellew of Ladder 27 and Firefighter Richard Sclafani of Ladder 103. The donated blood will help support Firefighters Joseph DiBernardo and Jeffrey Cool of Rescue 3 and Firefighter Eugene Stolowski of Ladder 27 as they recover from their injuries. Please join in showing your support.

Tsunami Relief – To ensure that our assistance is put to good use, we are joining the IAFF in supporting the nationwide effort led by former Presidents George Bush, Sr. and Bill Clinton through the USA Freedom Corps ( www.usafreedomcorps.gov ) to help those affected by the tsunami disaster. The IAFF has researched and identified the following charities as superbly qualified to deliver the assistance provided by IAFF affiliates, members and their families:

The UFOA is collecting donations from our members to make a special presentation to each organization from the Uniformed Fire Officers Association. At this time, these organizations are requesting that all donations be monetary. They are also unable to utilize volunteers either in the US or abroad.

UFOA/WW II Veterans - The UFOA and MBA Corps, a private firm, are undertaking a project to capture the memories of UFOA members who are also WWII vets, “The Bravest Generation. An Oral History of WWII by NYC Fire Officers.” We would like to have at least 25 UFOA members participate by having their thoughts and experiences recorded on videotape to be used to teach future generations. It would require approximately one (1) hour of the participant's time. For further information, please call MBA Corps at 212-633-2971 or go to the UFOA website www.ufoa.org . If you need assistance with transportation, please call the UFOA office at 212-293-9300.

National Fallen Firefighter Memorial: Emmitsburg, Maryland has a winding walkway surrounding the Memorial site, the “Walk of Honor”. This walk is composed of inscribed bricks that bear a name or dedication. There is a special section solely to honor the lives of the FDNY firefighters who died in the line of duty. Mrs. Vina Drennan, widow of Capt. John Drennan, who made the supreme sacrifice on May 17, 1994, has been working to have a brick laid in commemoration of every line of duty death from 1865 to the present. Mrs. Drennan has secured private funding to cover the cost of the 343 bricks for the fire fighters and fire officers killed on 9/11/01. A year ago, the UFOA asked for donations to help complete the FDNY portion of the winding walkway surrounding the Memorial site, the “Walk of Honor” for the pre- and post-9/11/01, bricks. The response has allowed for each death going back to 1919. There are only 190 names, dating back to 1865 that have not been covered. The cost of each brick is $100 and the brick will be inscribed with the member's name, rank and company and the date of death, next to the FDNY logo. Units that have Line of Duty plaques should contact NFFF to insure that there is a brick in place. Units may wish to purchase bricks for those members that have not already been recognized. If you would like to help complete this tribute, please consider a donation of any size to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Checks can be sent to:
