REDUCED STAFFING

The Department has decided to reduce staffing to 49 engine companies from 5 to 4 firefighters. Although they are claiming they have a contractual right to do so, we believe this policy endangers both public and firefighter safety.

As we approach the winter season with a very young department in all ranks, the fifth firefighter becomes even more important. We saw just last week what happens when there is a delay in getting water on a fire. A Captain was severely burned while rescuing children in a Bronx fire before the arrival of the first engine company.

The winter season places even more demands on engine company personnel and now with C+11 staffing, situations may occur where ladder companies may be staffed with only four firefighters.

We urge all Fire Officers to read and comply with Operations Bulletin dated 12/1/04, and exercise extreme caution when responding undermanned. As per AUC 329, units should not enter the IDLH unless a known life hazard exists.

Be sure to request R&R from Chief officers when necessary, when firefighters report an illness or injury, make proper notification and await the decision of the Medical Officer on duty.

Please call the UFOA office if you need our assistance.
